Sitting at my desk diligently typing away, I was determined to make it through a long list of overdue tasks.
My cell phone stayed in a handbag under the desk so as not to be a temptation for mind-wandering. Even so, the vibrating noise signaling a text briefly caught my attention. Telling myself I could check it upon completion of the first few things on the list, I let a little time pass before looking to see who might have left a message.
The words were short and simple: “Hotel booked in Fort Lauderdale for February. I love you.”
I forgot to mention that the weather outside at the time was freezing — icy, windy and very overcast. A trip to sunny Florida seemed too good to be true, something the second text I got shortly after confirmed: “So sorry, that last text was meant for my wife.”
Just to clarify, that would not be this wife, although I did call my husband to verify that although no tropical trips were in my immediate future, he does in fact love me.
So I’m thinking I won’t be the only Valentine out there who will be spending the holiday somewhere close to home. But on the bright side, we won’t have to worry about squeezing ourselves into a bathing suit on a beach in Florida, and if we’re lucky, we’ll all be spending it close to someone who loves us.
And maybe that’s not such a bad trade after all.
