The Market Basket

Long-time Greenvillians will recognize this familiar establishment which first opened under the name The Market Basket in the 1920s selling meat and groceries. In the 1950s, Louise and Buddy Ray purchased the store and renamed it as The Marquette Grocery and Meat Market. Some people say it was a social meeting place for residents all over Greenville, a place where people came to shop, get quality meat, talk and laugh. Raymond Durham started working at The Marquette as a young boy, and his family purchased the business in 1995, totally renovating the building and moving a restaurant into the space. So what can Greenville residents expect with the reopening of this community landmark? Same faces, same Southern hospitality, community charm and the same good old southern cooking. It’s just the way we like it around here.
